Behind the scenes from Commercial Design Trends volume 2304

The cleaning and preparation of the building site ahead of the construction of the new atrium and dome inside the old courtyard of the Auckland War Memorial Museum required the excavation and removal of approximately 50,000m3 of spoil.
Auckland excavation and cartage company Smith and Davies won the contract to do this. Director Bob Grove says this was a difficult job because of the enclosed nature of the site and the age of the existing building.
"The project called for a fair amount of lateral thinking. In the end we had to use a combination of access tunnels and cranes to lift machinery in to undertake the excavation works," he explains.
Once the initial excavations were completed, Smith and Davies excavated for the underground carpark and then was involved in the construction of the roads, footpaths and above-ground carparks around the museum. Lastly, it spread topsoil prior to planting.
