Providing a strong visual connection with the outdoors is a key design element for any waterfront home – after all the location is the main drawcard.
This new Mount Maunganui beach house, designed by architect Kerry Avery of Avery Team Architecture, maximises the view at every turn. Floor-to-ceiling glazing not only provides expansive ocean views, but also internal views over the recreational amenities provided on site.
Most of the main rooms open onto terraces, or have large bay or clerestory windows to bring in sun and light. The airy interior is further enhanced by high roof lines that appear to float above the steel and concrete structure.
Avery says that while the design is undeniably modern, the materials were chosen for their enduring appeal. Feature elements, such as the chimney and projecting terraces, are clad in weathered zinc.
Natural materials include flamed basalt slabs on the exterior terraces, and American white oak floors on the interior. The chimney surround features a rare black fossil marble.
Modern conveniences include under-ceiling infra-red heating, and automated lighting, security and digital entertainment systems.
