Second take from Remodeling Trends volume 2006
To effectively remodel a home, an interior designer not only needs a wealth of practical and aesthetic design knowledge, they also need the gift of listening closely.
Bussell Livingstone Interiors places an equal focus on space planning, function, detailing, aesthetics and paying close attention to a client's own ideas, says partner Barry Livingstone.
We believe in creating noteworthy interiors that bear our clients' signature as well as our own, says co-partner Janet Bussell.
An interior designer specializing in space planning and architecture, Bussell graduated design school with the highest academic achievement in 1992. Her fast-track career has included working on such notable projects as Gianni Versace's residence and Cher's Miami Beach and Malibu homes.
Livingstone also graduated from design school with honors. His career took an early step-up when he co-founded the South Beach Design Group in 1993, then Miami Beach's only premier design showroom.
More recently, the designers have appeared in several design-focused television shows, such as HGTV and TLC.
Bussell Livingstone Interiors was founded in 2001, and together, the partners offer their clients a one-stop-shop interior design experience.
"This comprehensive approach suits our busy clients, who prefer to deal with a single company throughout," says Bussell.
Perched on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean, this home, originally designed by Ron Goldman, has now been redesigned by Bussell Livingstone Interiors.
"Our clients wanted the home to be a peaceful family retreat," says Bussell. "At the same time, they wanted the space to be a suitable location for film shoots."
Bussell Livingstone created an interior that focuses on scale and colors.
"From the outset, the owners specified a simple palette of white, lilac and blue, because these colors promote tranquility, creativity and spirituality," says Bussell. "Instead of mixing diverse colors in the design, we mixed materials - marble, stainless steel, glass and sheer fabrics."
The main living area has 18ft-high ceilings with full-height sliding doors that open onto broad, stone walkways that surround the house. These provide film crews with easy access to most areas of the house.
Most walls on the ground level are Azure light glass, allowing the main living space to command dramatic, 360% views.

This remodeling project by Bussell Livingstone Interiors offers a simple, large-scale interior, with an emphasis on materials and color.
To create a free flow between the indoor and outdoor living areas, the full-height sliding doors are 6ft wide.
The owners' favorite color palette is blue. This can be seen in the sheer drapes and the blue-tinted glazing. White marble floors and bar furniture also feature in the interior.
