Fresh and clean from Home & Apartment Trends volume 2601
Simple lines, clear surfaces and plenty of natural light – these are the elements that make a space appear vibrant and refreshing.
Wood detailing and indoor planting offset with the clean, simple look of homogenous wall and floor tiles creates such a space in this bathroom by Timur Designs. Designer Ai Loon Yong says that wooden cabinets and door frames were chosen to soften the overall look of the design.
"We were also concerned with ensuring the bathroom was visually linked to the outdoors, as the house is located in a tropical setting. We created a large window with vertical wooden louvres. There is also a slatted skylight above the bathtub to let in light when the louvres are closed," she says.
As a fairly narrow space, the bathroom is laid out in a galley style, with the tub positioned beneath the large window. A large mirror above the vanity on the opposite wall reflects the leafy view, making it seem that the room is surrounded in greenery.
A hardwood bench seat beside the bath provides a place to sit and dress next to the planter boxes.
The ensuite is designed with a similar aesthetic. Instead of bringing planting indoors, a glass wall allows a view of palms planted outside. This provides privacy as well as visual interest in the room.
"The vanity is freestanding, with a narrow section of mirror extending to the ceiling. Marble for the vanity and wall and floor tiles was selected to give precedence to the view," says Ai Loon Yong.
This bathroom is laid out in a galley style, with the bathtub and frameless shower positioned alongside a large window. Floor and wall finishes are homogenous tiles, with a textured tile used on the floor for grip.
Colours are warm and natural. Chengal hardwood is used throughout this house, lending a sense of consistency. In the bathroom it is used for cabinets, door frames and a bench seat.
Wooden louvres provide privacy. Overhead, a slatted skylight lends natural light when the louvres are closed, and also allows light into the shower enclosure.
The powder room is created using marble wall and floor tiles. By limiting the materials in this room, the designer has allowed the view to become the feature. A tall mirror expands the sense of space.
