Lie back and relax from Home & Apartment Trends volume 2501

As our lives get busier, the whole idea of creating a bathroom as a private sanctuary becomes more and more appealing – and it's a universal trend.
Increasingly, bathrooms in new houses are designed to provide spa-like facilities that offer an escape from the stresses of a busy lifestyle. Indeed, there is even an expectation that such amenities will be provided, says Tara Ryan, owner of Ryan Young Interiors – the company that designed this private spa suite.
"People love the idea of a personal home spa that is a private retreat – a room to relax in," she says. "Many of the new homes in the LuxeHills development in Chengdu have separate spa facilities in addition to the master suite – some with massage tables. Many also have separate tea-drinking rooms and yoga spaces."
To create a spa environment for this LuxeHills house, the Ryan Young team made the whirlpool tub the centre of attention, elevating it on a marble plinth that sits on a bed of river pebbles. Similar pebbles line the rear wall of the room, enhancing the sense of nature.
"We love to bring organic material into our spas," says Ryan. "This room also features ferns, twigs, bamboo and other indoor plantings, which reinforce the sense of a tropical retreat."
Bamboo is incorporated in an illuminated glazed box that runs the length of one wall. Ryan says the sculptural work was designed to provide a sense of looking through a window. This room has its own great view, however. French doors lead to a patio that overlooks a picturesque lake.
Other artworks and materials were all chosen to enhance a feeling of serenity. Colours are warm and tones are muted.
Contrasting textures add further interest. The smooth polished marble of the tub deck contrasts with the pebbles and a woven artwork above the bath.
And just to ensure every need is catered for, beyond the archway are two side-by-side wet and dry saunas.
French doors and large windows ensure there is plenty of natural light in this personal spa retreat.
