Secure footing from Outdoor Living & Holiday Home Trends volume 2413

One way to secure a rewarding career is to obtain a paid apprenticeship with a registered tradesperson. Whether you undertake training as a roofer, plumber, drainlayer or gasfitter, your skills will always be in demand. You can be your own boss and become part of a skilled, reliable workforce that looks after its own.
The Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying and Roofing Industry Training Organisation (ITO) offers apprenticeship leads and advice to those thinking of taking up one of these fulfilling trades.
AHI Roofing provides a good example of the training environment that an ITO apprentice will work in. Regional sales manager Fendall Halliburton says AHI Roofing utilises leading-edge technology to produce the extensive Gerard Roofs range of profiles, colours and finishes.
"The roofing trade is rewarding, but can also be demanding. For instance, before we sign up an apprentice through the ITO we send them up onto the roof with a roofing gang to ensure they have a head for heights," he says. "We do everything we can to encourage young apprentices. While there are plenty of 40 to 50-year-olds in the trade, there aren't many master roofers in their thirties – these trainees sent to us from the ITO are the lifeblood of our trade's future."

AHI Roofing's experienced master roofers undertook the installation of this metal pressed tile roof from Gerard Roofs with hands-on help from paid apprentices. The trainees were first directed to the company by the Plumbing, Gasfitting, Drainlaying and Roofing Industry Training Organisation (ITO).
