Desert glamour from Home & Living Trends volume 2309
Manipulation of light is always an effective – and dramatic – way to draw attention to a space or to create a focal point. A large staircase leads from the double-height grand entrance of this house to the upper level of bedroom suites.
To draw the eye up towards a group of sculptures, two backlit slabs of ¾-inch-thick onyx form a glowing display stand. Artistic Lighting, a company that specializes in working with illuminated glass, designed the display box, fabricated the lamps, worked with the stonemason and co-ordinated the installation.
Two book-matched slabs of light green onyx, selected for their translucence and color, blend with the hardwood flooring and cabinetry. Artistic Lighting then fitted Flatlite electroluminescent Phosphor light below the onyx, providing soft, but effective, backlighting for the sculptures.
Artistic Lighting Solutions designs illuminated hand rails, shelves and bars, working with glass, freeform plastics, manmade products and stone.

The interior design called for a large slab of onyx in the landing at the top of the stairs. Julie Porter asked Artistic Lighting Solutions to come up with a design that incorporated lighting to showcase the stone and art displayed on it. Artistic Lighting's solution was to backlight the onyx with a Flatlite electroluminescent Phosphor system.
