Face value – Wynyard Quarter events centre - materials supplied by Mico Metals
Face value – Wynyard Quarter events centre - materials supplied by Mico Metals from Commercial Design Trends volume 2712
Form and function lie at the core of every civic building. This is even more critical when the building is situated in a marine environment, similar to the Viaduct Events Centre at Wynyard Quarter.
Mico Metals was approached to provide a stainless steel product suited to the environment and the look of the building, says architectural product manager Paul Orsler.
"Mico specified a relatively new product from the stainless steel family – 445M2. With its ferritic microstructure and higher chromium content, 445M2 offers better resistance to atmospheric corrosion, better thermal properties, and has a lower density, making it a lighter-weight, and lower-cost option to 316 stainless steel.
"Another benefit of 445M2 is that it has excellent punchability, bendability and weldability, making it easy to fabricate. These advantages have resulted in 445M2 being used as roll-formed roofing, and, as in this application, for cladding."
"The events centre is the second large-scale development where 445M2 has been specified for roofing and cladding. The first project is now four years old and the 445M2 is performing brilliantly with minimal maintenance," says Orsler.
With more than 60 years' experience in New Zealand, and a nationwide network on call, Mico Metals has the expertise to provide product and technical support to any significant project.

Metals distributor Mico Metals specified 445M2 stainless steel for the roof and facade of the Viaduct Events Centre.
The ferritic microstructure of 445M2 stainless steel gives it increased malleability, making it easy to form.
