A happy place from Kitchen Trends volume 2702
The opportunities for experimenting with different ways of cooking are so much greater today than a few years ago. With the features on many modern appliances, cooking can be both innovative and enjoyable.
In this apartment kitchen, designer Lynn Malone has incorporated many different Smeg appliances to make it easy to cook a variety of dishes from trout to pizza, make coffee and entertain family and friends.
Because the kitchen is part of the larger living room, Malone specified premium-quality cabinetry and appliances to complement the overall aesthetic of the wider living space.
"I wanted everything to be state of the art, so I have chosen products from world-class companies," she says.
"In order to create a really workable kitchen, I experimented with new appliances, such as Smeg's steam oven and warming drawers, and have integrated them to maximise the space and to create an international contemporary style for the kitchen."
Malone selected her appliances after visiting the Smeg showroom and comparing models to determine the functions that best suited her. "This is my third apartment with Smeg kitchen appliances, and Smeg is my brand of choice when I design residential projects," she says.
An 80cm-wide Smeg induction cooktop, with four zones and a concave wok recess, and a Smeg undermounted sink, were selected for their low profile, while the 60cm Smeg pyrolytic thermoseal oven is self-cleaning and offers a pizza-making function. In the role of a second oven is a 45cm-wide microwave/convection oven combination.
Supporting these appliances are two Smeg warming drawers, a 45cm-wide steam oven and an integrated rangehood that automatically turns on when ventilation is required.
For a quick cleanup process, the 90cm-wide horizontal Smeg dishwasher is simple to use and easily takes large items such as 60cm-wide oven trays, barbecue hot plates and trivets.
"The linear styling of these Smeg appliances fits well with the design of the kitchen, and has allowed me to maximise the way the space is utilised," says the designer.
The kitchen also includes a fully automatic Smeg coffee machine with a grinder and optional features that allow you to control the water temperature and coffee strength.
In the outside kitchen is a 90cm-wide Smeg barbecue with a hinged lid and motorised rotisserie, a smoker drawer, and a temperature gauge. A Smeg underbench beverage refrigerator is by the barbecue, convenient when entertaining outside, and there's a Smeg top-mounted, square-bowl sink.

A Smeg SIHP3WG4 80-cm induction cooktop is teamed with a Smeg PASC580 IFPX integrated rangehood.
The Smeg VSTQ40N stainless steel single bowl sink is undermounted into the benchtop close to the induction cooktop.
The horizontal 90cm-wide Smeg STH903 integrated dishwasher is easy to load and unload, and it works well with the linear aesthetic of this kitchen, designed by Lynn Malone.
The Smeg BQ91T 90cm-wide stainless steel outdoor barbecue has a motorised rotisserie and hinged, double-chamber stainless steel lid. This barbecue can be operated either from natural or an LPG gas supply. It has three stainless steel burners, an infrared ceramic grill, dishwasher-friendly, stainless steel modular grids and a warming rack.
