The feel-good factor
The feel-good factor from Bathroom Trends volume 2310
There is an expectation that the decor in traditional shingle-style houses will reflect the gracious look created by the exterior architecture.
This master suite, with its extensive millwork and traditional, multi-pane windows, meets those expectations. But it is also characterized by its focus on comfort and luxury, with the bathroom more reminiscent of a five-star hotel.
Peter Fallon, of Fallon Custom Homes & Renovations, says the house was decorated by a number of different designers, as part of a special display home exercise. The master bedroom, by Mitchell Gold, has a soft, inviting ambiance, created by the warm neutral color palette and the strong textural contrasts. Glittering Venetian-style mirrors and mirrored night stands juxtapose a shaggy carpet and boldly carved bed posts.
The master bathroom, on the other hand, has a very simple, yet elegant material palette. Designed by Barbara Kotzen, the bathroom features Cedar polished marble, with the visual interest created by the manner in which this is used. Large slabs of marble feature on the vanity top and tub surround, while a mix of large and small marble tiles defines specific areas. The small tiles, for example, highlight the shower floor and ceiling. Kotzen has also introduced tiled herringbone mosaic panels to the main floor and shower walls.
"Placing the panels in narrow areas, such as the floor next to the tub, helps to bring a sense of balance to the room," Kotzen says. "Here, it almost acts as a runner, making the space appear larger."
A marble strip extending up one wall and along the ceiling was also designed to provide visual balance.
In keeping with the traditional millwork found elsewhere in the house, the vanity cabinetry extends to the ceiling, providing plenty of storage. The vanity itself provides his-and-her sinks, and a stepped-down make-up area.
The shower, which doubles as a steam room, incorporates a marble seat and a rain showerhead. A spa bath provides further five-star luxury.
Soft neutral color tones create a tranquil retreat for this master bedroom, which incorporates a separate seating area. The bedroom, designed by Mitchell Gold, is in a new shingle-style display house built by Fallon Custom Homes & Renovations.
Venetian-style mirrors provide a highly decorative backdrop to the bedroom, and are a shiny contrast to the more textured elements in the room.
The master bathroom, designed by Barbara Kotzen, features Cedar polished marble. In the steam shower, a variety of marble tiles in different sizes add visual interest. The shower includes a herringbone tile pattern on one wall, and a marble bench seat.
Warm white vanity cabinetry helps to soften the look of the bathroom, and enhance its gracious look.
A television on a swiveling stand can be viewed from the tub. It tucks into the cabinetry when not in use.
